LANDSCAPE INSTALLATIONS
Flower Beds, Mulch, Tree Rings & Landscape Design
Southline Landscaping provides landscape installation services designed to improve curb appeal, reduce maintenance, and create cleaner, more functional outdoor spaces. Our landscape installation work includes flower bed installation, mulch installation, decorative tree rings, bed renovation, and simple landscape design for homeowners throughout Central Alabama.
We focus on proper preparation, clean installation, and long-term plant health. A good landscape should not only look nice on the day it is finished — it should be installed in a way that helps control weeds, protects plants, manages moisture, and avoids problems around trees and home foundations.
Flower Bed Installation & Renovation
Flower beds are one of the most effective ways to improve the appearance of a home. Whether we are installing a new bed or refreshing an existing one, we begin by evaluating the layout, plant placement, drainage, existing soil conditions, and maintenance goals.
Our flower bed services may include:
New flower bed installation
Existing bed renovation
Weed and vegetation removal
Bed shaping and edging
Mulch installation
Decorative rock installation
Shrub and plant placement
Tree rings
Simple landscape design
We build beds with both appearance and function in mind. Proper spacing, root health, moisture movement, and long-term maintenance are all considered before materials are installed.
Proper Landscape Fabric Placement
Landscape fabric can be useful when installed correctly, especially in areas where weed control and material separation are important. However, fabric should not be used carelessly around plants or trees.
When landscape fabric is used, we focus on proper placement to help reduce weed breakthrough while still allowing plants to receive the water and oxygen they need. Openings are cut around plants to allow room for root growth and water movement. Fabric should never be wrapped tightly around trunks, stems, or root flares.
Mulch Installed at the Proper Depth
Mulch does more than improve appearance. When installed at the proper depth, mulch helps reduce weed growth, hold soil moisture, regulate soil temperature, and protect plant roots.
A standard mulch depth is approximately 3 inches for most landscape beds. This depth is usually enough to help suppress weeds and create a clean finished look without smothering plants.
Too little mulch may not provide effective weed control. Too much mulch can hold excessive moisture, restrict airflow, and create problems around plant crowns, tree roots, and foundations.
No Volcano Mulching Around Trees
One common mistake is piling mulch high against the trunk of a tree. This is often called “volcano mulching,” and it can cause long-term problems.
Mulch should not be stacked against the trunk or root flare of a tree. Excess mulch against the bark can trap moisture, encourage decay, attract pests, and stress the tree.
For tree rings, we install mulch or decorative material in a cleaner, safer way by keeping the base of the tree exposed and tapering mulch away from the trunk.
Foundation & Moisture Considerations
Mulch and landscape beds installed too high against a home can create moisture problems. Organic mulch holds water, and if it is piled directly against siding, brick weep holes, wood trim, or foundation areas, it may contribute to rot, pest issues, or trapped moisture.
When installing beds near a home, we consider:
Foundation height
Siding clearance
Drainage direction
Existing grade
Mulch depth near the structure
Water movement away from the home
Our goal is to create clean, attractive beds without creating moisture problems around the structure.
Landscape Design
Every landscape installation begins with a plan. We help homeowners choose layouts and materials that fit the home, budget, and desired maintenance level.
Our landscape design considerations include:
Bed shape and size
Plant placement
Mulch or rock selection
Tree ring layout
Edging options
Drainage and grading
Maintenance needs
Overall curb appeal
